One of the most powerful skills to have as a leader, and a proven strategy in the workplace, is emotional intelligence. This skill is vital to the success of businesses, workplace environments and relationships.
What is emotional intelligence?
VeryWell Mind defines it as the ability to perceive, interpret, demonstrate, control, evaluate and use emotions, to communicate with and relate to others effectively and constructively. It’s being able to comprehend and respond to emotions in an impactful way.
As a consultant in the property management industry, I use these skills to asses everything from the workplace environment to the challenges and issues within a company.
I also use emotional intelligence to discover a company’s future leaders, uncover their motivations, understand their strengths and evaluate how those strengths can best be used to elevate them on their leadership journey.
Using emotional intelligence as a strategy in the workplace means going a bit deeper into formerly unchartered territories in the corporate world. It also means establishing boundaries, improving interpersonal communication and giving people the space to express their perspectives and experiences.
What are the benefits of emotional intelligence in the workplace?
Some of the benefits include reduced high turnover rates, improved decision-making, increased team performance, decreased occupational stress and increased leadership ability.
One of my favorite things about using emotional intelligence in business is how it aids in benching the ego. There’s no time for pride when coming together to work as a team and establishing unity in accomplishing common goals.
Emotional intelligence is becoming more of a focal point in corporate work culture and I’m glad to say it’s here to stay. It’s effective and key in helping CEOs and employees work through and solve challenges together thereby building a stronger foundation.
